bowl of pomegranate seeds - deseed a pomegranate in less than 5 minutes!

Last week my son saw big beautiful pomegranates in the grocery store and I remembered how much I loved eating those as a kid, because of their mess we didn’t have them often.

The kids and I had messily eaten one the day we bought 6 last week, outside on the picnic table, and the others were still sitting, awaiting the mess making, at the end of the dining room table.  I came across this video last night, about a simple way to de-seed pomegranates, tried it, and it WORKED! I wanted to share with you before the pomegranates you bought with good intentions turned bad, or made a mess over everyone’s clothes.

I’ve found that this works best with pomegranates that are still firm– if yours are soft, you may want to use the water method: cut pomegranate into quarters, then submerge underwater and work loose. The white bits will float to the top for easy removal.

  3. Score the pomegranate with a sharp knife, just getting through the outer rind, about 1 mm.

  8. De-seed a pomegranate in 5 mins or less - Step 4 - thwak out the seeds using a wooden spoon or similar object
  9. Use a wooden spoon, or in my case, a metal spoon rest, to thwak out the seeds! Just firmly hit the outside while holding it from the bottom. Allow the seeds to fall into a bowl.
  10. Step 5. Enjoy! I ate a bowl of pomegranate seeds like cereal last night, how cool is that?
