Last week my son saw big beautiful pomegranates in the grocery store and I remembered how much I loved eating those as a kid, because of their mess we didn’t have them often.
The kids and I had messily eaten one the day we bought 6 last week, outside on the picnic table, and the others were still sitting, awaiting the mess making, at the end of the dining room table. I came across this video last night, about a simple way to de-seed pomegranates, tried it, and it WORKED! I wanted to share with you before the pomegranates you bought with good intentions turned bad, or made a mess over everyone’s clothes.
I’ve found that this works best with pomegranates that are still firm– if yours are soft, you may want to use the water method: cut pomegranate into quarters, then submerge underwater and work loose. The white bits will float to the top for easy removal.

De-seed a pomegranate in 5 minutes or less- step 1 score the skin
-
Score the pomegranate with a sharp knife, just getting through the outer rind, about 1 mm.
-
pull apart to split in half
-
Either pry apart firmly, or insert your knife a little bit and use that as a lever. The pomegranate will separate easily.

Deseed a Pomegranate in 5 minutes or less - step 3 - stretch gently to loosen membrane

Gently stretch (not too hard- it’ll rip apart) to loosen the membranes.

De-seed a pomegranate in 5 mins or less - Step 4 - thwak out the seeds using a wooden spoon or similar object
-
Use a wooden spoon, or in my case, a metal spoon rest, to thwak out the seeds! Just firmly hit the outside while holding it from the bottom. Allow the seeds to fall into a bowl.

Step 5. Enjoy! I ate a bowl of pomegranate seeds like cereal last night, how cool is that?

I’ve seen soaking them in water but this looks easier than that! Thanks for sharing.
Me, too.
I wonder how many membranes break on this way.
Oh, wait! I have a pomegranate here…..I’ll just try
Yum! Thanks for sharing.
I was told to lightly hit the pomegranate all the way around and then cut it open. Then cut it open and all the seeds will come out. I’m going to try it both ways, since I have 2 pomegranates at home, and see which one works the best.
We’ve always spit out the seeds after chewing them. Do you eat the whole seed?
I don’t- I swallow them like berry seeds :)
We have pomegranate trees on our property and have deseeded hundreds of these this season. The absolute best gadget is the 60-second Pomogranate Deseeder. We got ours locally, but they sell them on Amazon for a couple dollars. It really does work in less than a minute!
Thanks for sharing this! We love pomegranates, and this will definitely make it easier to eat them more often!
Just a question tho… why would there be an issue with shopping at Costco?
It’s a big box store :) It’s better to shop local/seasonal, nothing too bad :)
I’m pretty sure local/seasonal would mean no pomegranates for me. lol
I was wondering the same thing about Costco?? Love that place!!
CARA – brilliant tutorial! I will definitely be sharing this on my FB page this week.
Thank you, thank you!

I have tried soaking them in water, quartering them. using a spoon. they all work great. I think I will try the Pomogranate Deseeder next. I chew and eat the seeds good, filber. My parents ate them. I though that’s the way to eat them. Love Pomogranate.
