That magic dirt… I was skeptical. You’ve probably seen muddy bath water, mud masks, and nearly-black drinking water around on social media if you’re in the same naturally-minded circles as I am.  Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic is taking off, and it turns out, there is a lot of science to support this!

Below we are going to look at a few of the many uses of fulvic and humic, along with the buckets of studies that support its use!

Jump ahead:

What is Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic?

The carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic that I like is naturally sourced from organic Canadian peat bogs and is cleanly made of two of the nutrients, fulvic and humic.  Fulvic and humic are key nutrients missing from our industrially-farmed soils!  Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humicis literally a tasteless concentrated dose of these nutrients that we have been missing from our poor depleted soil, making our bodies poor and depleted as well.

Many of us choose pastured and sustainably farmed food when we can, which means that the fulvic and humic have been returned to the soil through the decomposition process.  But the truth is that most of us aren’t able to do that all the time, we have now 2-3 generations that have been raised on inferior food, and the outside time in the dirt that our kids DO have is more often than not on fields of monoculture- the soccer fields, sprayed school playgrounds, and manicured lawns of parks and yards.

Studies referenced:

https://jssae.journals.ekb.eg/article_39782.html – lettuce shows increase in nutrients and growth when fulvic and humic is applied.

Humic substances, such as those listed in the above title, play a vital role in soil fertility and plant nutrition. Plants grown on soils which contain adequate humin, humic adds (HAs), and fulvic adds (FAs) are less subject to stress, are healthier, produce higher yields; and the nutritional quality of harvested foods and feeds are superior.

Electrically charged sites on humic substances function to dissolve and bind trace minerals. When a complex reaction with metal cations occurs on the humic substance surface it is termed chelation. Two negatively charged sites on the humic substance attract metal cations with two negative charges. As a result the cation binds itself to more than one charged anionic site. By forming organo metal claws these organic acids bring about the dissolution of primary and secondary minerals within the soil. These minerals then become available for uptake by plant roots.

The greater the affinity of the metal cation for humic acid (HA) or fulvic acid (FA), the easier the dissolution of the cation from various mineral surfaces. Both the acidic effect and the chelation effects appear to be involved in dissolution of minerals and binding processes. Evidence for the dissolution of minerals can be supported by x ray diffraction and infrared analysis. Chelation of plant nutrients such as iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), and calcium (Ca) reduces their toxicity as cations, prevents their leaching, and increases their uptake rate by plant roots.

Why Plant-Made vs Mined Humic and Fulvic Acid?

Plant-made (referred as derived from carbohydrates in the literature) is more absorbable to the human body, and it is in its natural state rather than chemically processed from rocks.

There are other forms of fulvic acid, but as usual, we want to make sure the kind we are taking actually is usable by our bodies!

The Soil-Based Supplement you NEED

Carbohydrate-derived fulvic and humic is a supplement that contains vital nutrients that our depleted soil is missing due to industrial farming.

Starting this supplement was a game-changer for me for reducing inflammation, ramping up energy, and losing those last 10 lbs of baby weight.

Is Fulvic and Humic evidence based?

Yes, absolutely! You can search Google Scholar for published medical articles, and as I can I’ll update this page with links to studies!

The information gathered in this review indicate that FvA  can act as an immune modulator, influence the redox state, and potentially affect gut health. FvA is shown to decrease proinflammatory markers but also activate the immune system to kill bacteria. It is shown to reduce oxidative stress and even induce apoptosis in hepatic cancer lines. FvA is shown to also influence the microbiome and possibly improve gut function. FvA appears to have a yin-yang effect when it comes to these physiological states.

What does the research say about Fulvic and Humic Acid and Eczema?

Eczema and skin conditions are really very quick to respond to Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic.

“CHD-FA (Carbohydrate Derived Fulvic Acid- BOO) significantly improved some aspects of eczema. Investigator assessment of global response to treatment with CHD-FA was significantly better than that with emollient therapy alone. The results of this small exploratory study suggest that CHD-FA warrants further investigation in the treatment of eczema.”

An initial randomized double blind controlled trial indicated that fulvic acid was well-tolerated in patients with eczema, where side effects were minimal and severity and erythema were significantly reduced compared with the placebo control.

What does the research say about Fulvic and Humic Acid and Gut Health?

Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic improve gut health a few different ways. First, it lowers inflammation. When inflammation of the intestine is lowered, repair of the gut wall is easier and nutrient absorption is improved.

Second, Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic actually encourages balance in the gut flora, even breaking through the hard-to-get through biofilm associated with yeast overgrowth.

Compared to other anti-fungals, Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic works better and faster, with no associated toxicity.

When the gut flora is balanced, the gut-brain axis improves, associating with less stress hormones being released, less anxiety, and less living in ‘fight or flight’ mode.  As you know, when you are in stress mode, your gut doesn’t work as it should.

This is really exciting as we are working to balance our gut flora, repair the gut lining, and absorb our food!

Studies about Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic and Gut Health:

Humic acids have a profound effect on healthy colonic microbiome and may be potentially interesting substances for the development of drugs that control the innate colonic microbiome.

Carbohydrate-Derived Fulvic Acid (CHD-FA) is a microbicidal compound that acts non-specifically on the cell membrane. Therefore, it may serve as a potential novel antiseptic agent for the treatment of oral candidosis and other candidal biofilm infections. Increasingly Candida biofilms are becoming clinically important (Tumbarello et al., 2007; Ramage et al., 2009), particularly because of inappropriate or misuse of broad spectrum antimicrobials that are ineffective against recalcitrant biofilms (Niimi et al., 2010).

In the context of oral health, individuals suffer from a range of oral candidal diseases that cause high levels of morbidity. Moreover, there are many other oral diseases of microbial biofilm origin, such as caries and periodontitis, which would benefit from novel antiseptic molecules, assuming these meet appropriate safety standards. CHD-FA has already shown to have no sign of toxicity in rats and humans, and in fact was reported to have anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties, possibly through a free radical scavenging mechanism (Gandy et al., 2011; Sabi et al., 2011).

https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmicb.2012.00116/full

Time-kill analysis of CHD-FA was performed in comparison to the other classes of antifungals, and whilst caspofungin achieved the greatest kill, CHD-FA elicited its maximum activity quicker than any of the other agents, which is of particular benefit in treating systemic infections such as candidemia, where delayed antifungal therapy coincides with mortality rates.

FvA is suggested to improve the gut flora, nutrient absorption, and heal adverse disorders related to the gut.

What does the research say about Fulvic and Humic Acid and Nutrient Absorption?

The below study is exciting. It shows that the combination of fulvic and humic acid increase iron and manganese absorption up to a certain point, and then they stimulate the body to decrease it. What does this mean? It means that Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic encourages the body to be at the exact correct amount- not too little, not too much.

For those who eat a lot of red meat, there is a concern about hemochromatosis (excess iron) especially in men and women who are past menopause.  Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic could provide the missing ‘magic’ that was once available in our food supply that encouraged the body to better regulate minerals- increasing when needed and slowing absorption when needed.

Fulvic acid and humic acid work together for this, reminding us of the need to take both, not just fulvic.

The effects of FA and HA on iron homeostasis were significantly different. FA proved to be a good iron source, and slightly increased the iron content of liver and kidney, but – up to a dietary iron level of 52.7 mg/kg – it did not influence the efficiency of iron absorption. Above a dietary iron level of 52.7 mg/kg down-regulation of Fe absorption can be assumed.

What does the research say about Fulvic and Humic Acid and Metabolism, Mitochondria, and Energy?

Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic is really effective for energy because it goes into the cells and increases the mitochondria function. Our mitochondria give us energy! Studies show that Shilajit (a less pure form of Fulvic and Humic than Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic) are linked to increased mitochondrial function.

In animal studies, Fulvic and Humic are shown to increase fat metabolism, ie our ability to use our body fat for energy.  In studies of overweight humans, fulvic and humic were shown to change gene expression to favor fat loss and muscle gain.

It also shows that Fulvic and Humic can reverse fatigue caused by mitochondrial stress associated with chronic fatigue syndrome.

👩‍🔬 Remember school science?  Mitochondria is the power house of the cell! Your science teacher was right, this is important information to know.

Shilajit prevented CFS-induced mitochondrial dysfunction by stabilizing the complex enzyme activities and the loss of MMP. Shilajit reversed CFS-induced mitochondrial oxidative stress in terms of NO concentration and, LPO, SOD and catalase activities.

The results indicate that shilajit mitigates the effects of CFS in this model possibly through the modulation of HPA axis and preservation of mitochondrial function and integrity.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22771318/

Humic substances, at concentrations of between 40 and 400 mg L-1, normally also increased the efficiency of the process of oxidative phosphorylation in vitro, particularly after contact periods with the mitochondria of over 1 hour.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2953069/

With the raised concentration of dietary fulvic acid, hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) activity was significantly increased (P < 0.05), and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity was significantly decreased (P < 0.05) in adipose tissue. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of fulvic acid reduced the mean backfat thickness of pigs. This change related to the increased activity of HSL and the decreased activity of LPL in adipose tissue.

The study provided maiden evidence that oral Shilajit supplementation in adult overweight/class I obese human subjects promoted skeletal muscle adaptation through upregulation of ECM-related genes that control muscle mechanotransduction properties, elasticity, repair, and regeneration.

What does the research say about  Fulvic and Humic Acid and Cancer?

Fulvic and Humic acid appear to work against cancer multiple ways.  I stabilizes the immune system (increasing when it needs to be increased, lowering in the case of autoimmune when it needs to be lowered) to fight the cancer cells. It also stimulates gene expression that encourages killing of cancer cells.

In all tested reactions, HA showed significant stimulation on immune reactions, including suppression of cancer growth and inhibition of lipopolysaccharide-induced hepatotoxicity.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3719442/

Analysis of the data reported herein reveals that HA exerts antiproliferative action and growth inhibition on HL-60 cells through induction of apoptosis, which may have anticancer properties potentially useful for the development of new drug products.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15302226/

We found that MP [Mineral Pitch; humic substance] enhanced anti-cancer effects by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting proliferation. MP induced both ROS and NO, upon neutralizing them, there was a partial recovery of apoptosis and proliferation. MP also induced miRNA-22 expression, while miRNA-21 expression was inhibited. Over-expression of miRNA-22 resulted in a significant inhibition of proliferation. miRNA-22 directly targeted c-myc gene, thereby inhibited proliferation. These results clearly show that MP induces its anti-cancer activity by more than one pathway.

FA-CM enhanced cell death in various human cancer cells such as Hep3B, LNCaP, and HL60. Taken together, FA most likely stimulates immune-modulating molecules such as NO and induces cancer cell apoptosis.

What does the research say about  Fulvic and Humic Acid and Autoimmune Conditions?

Allergies

In the second study below, a decreased reaction to a skin-prick test was shown with carbohydrate-derived fulvic acid  taken internally, compared to the placebo.  This is exciting! I’ve noticed this myself, since I’ve been taking Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic I haven’t had seasonal allergies.  From the studies, it looks like Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic regulates the genes (3rd study), histamine response, and reduces inflammation.

Our results show that CP-FA [Canadian Peat Fulvic Acid: BOO] may be useful for the treatment or prevention of allergic diseases.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17485833/

No severe adverse events occurred, establishing that CHD-FA to be safe at doses up to 40 mL twice daily for a week and that at this dosage CHD-FA acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. These findings confirm earlier animal data.

In conclusion, SS-FA decreased the histamine release and the expression of various genes related to the allergy responses which occur in PMACI-stimulated KU812 cells. Our study suggests that FA obtained from excess sludge may be useful as a new resource of FA production. SS-FA may be of therapeutic use as a treatment for immediate-type allergy by suppressing basophils activation, and this effect may occur as a result of the decreased expressions of the following genes-BMP2, BMP6, CCL11, FLT3, GBP3, IL13, IL12RB1, L13RA1, INHBC, ITGA2/CD49b, ITGAM, IRF8, MAPK8, MS4A2, SELL and TNFRSF6/Fas.

What does the research say about  Fulvic and Humic Acid and the Immune System?

Fulvic and Humic  are shown to regulate the immune system. This means if your immune system isn’t functioning well enough, as is true in cancer, infection, and other illnesses, it stimulates the immune system. If you have an over active immune system, as we see with autoimmune disorders, it calms down the immune system and brings balance to the body.

Increased nutrient absorption, lower stress, better functioning immune system in trout: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33420170/

Humic acid and FA supplementation resulted in strong humoral immune stimulation. Our data also indicate that FA content is responsible for the mild hypothyroid effect of humic substances.

What does the research say about  Fulvic and Humic Acid and Hormones?

The present study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of PS [Purified Shilajit; a less bioavailable form of Fulvic and Humic than BOO] for testosterone secretion and stimulation effects on normal healthy volunteers in the age group of 45–55 years. This effect was clarified by estimation of free and total testosterone on 0, 30, 60 and 90 days where the rise of these two androgenic markers was significant. Testosterone synthesis and secretion was supported by the maintenance levels of two gonadotropic hormones LH and FSH as well as elevation of testosterone precursor DHEAs.

What does the research say about  Fulvic and Humic Acid and Diabetes?

It appears that the adverse effects of hyperglycemia on vascular endothelial cells may be corrected by addition of humic water. The above promising results of in vitro tests provide an opportunity to the possible use of humic water in the supportive treatment of endothelial dysfunction disorders in diabetes.

Traditional medicine and modern research claim FvA can modulate the immune system, influence the oxidative state of cells, and improve gastrointestinal function; all of which are hallmarks of diabetes. This minireview outlines the available peer-reviewed research on FvA and examines its anecdotal health claims. We show that although available research has been minimal, there is substantial evidence to pursue FvA research in preventing chronic inflammatory diseases, including diabetes.

In the diabetic rats, all the three doses of shilajit [a lesser form of fulvic/humic] produced a significant reduction in blood glucose levels and also produced beneficial effects on the lipid profile.

Shilajit is effective in controlling blood glucose levels and improves the lipid profile.

The hypoglycemic effect of shilajit (100 mg/kg) is signifi-
cantly higher than that of metformin (500 mg/kg). But the com-
bination of shilajit with metformin produced no further sig-
nificant reduction in the blood glucose level compared to that
produced by shilajit (100 mg/kg) per se

What does the research say about  Fulvic and Humic Acid and Thyroid?

Studies have shown fulvic acid can be very beneficial in normalizing the thyroid by increasing hormone production in hypothyroidism and calming activity in cases of hyperthyroidism.

Stimulate, nourish, and repair thyroid function with nature’s remedies while relieving deadly symptoms; fulvic acid offers hope. Natural therapies can prevent and treat thyroid disease, including hypothyroidsim (underactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), Graves Disease and Wilsonís Syndrome, which are the underlying causes of many serious illnesses.
Thyroid malfunction, both overactive and underactive, is generally due to autoimmune response by the body. This is where the body’s immune system produces antibodies which attack the gland because the tissues seem foreign to the body.

What does the research say about Fulvic and Humic Acid and Neurological Symptoms?

Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder involving extracellular plaques (amyloid-β) and intracellular tangles of tau protein. Recently, tangle formation has been identified as a major event involved in the neurodegenerative process.

We show that the fulvic acid is an active compound against preformed fibrils affecting the whole structure by diminishing length of PHFs and probably acting at the hydrophobic level, as we observed by atomic force techniques. Thus, fulvic acid is likely to provide new insights in the development of potential treatments for Alzheimer’s disease using natural products.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21785188/

Shilajit is a potent and very safe dietary supplement, potentially able to prevent several diseases, but its main medical application now appears to come from its actions in benefit of cognition and potentially as a dietary supplement to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

Anxiety

Shilajit reversed the CFS-induced increase in immobility period and decrease in climbing behavior as well as attenuated anxiety in the EPM test.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22771318/

Seizures

SJ pretreatment significantly inhibited the seizures induced by MES, INH and PTZ in a dose dependent manner. Further, SJ augmented brain GABA levels to normal, decreased by INH and PTZ in mice brain. SJ pretreatment also significantly inhibited the climbing and stereotyped behaviours induced by apomorphine. The present data seems to confirm the antiepileptic activity of SJ which may be because of enhancing the GABAergic system. The antipsychotic activity observed may be due to anti-dopaminergic and/or GABA-mimetic actions.

What does the research say about Fulvic and Humic Acid and Athletes?

Shilajit (a less available form than Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic) is shown to lower exercise-induced tiredness, help the person retain muscle mass and muscle strength, and balance testosterone (needed to build muscle).

I’ve seen this in action myself. When I started taking Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic I started being able to run without getting winded! As a swimmer, I could swim hard for a long time, but I never got the hang of running more than a few minutes at a time.  My endurance on land went WAY up within a week of starting Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic, and now at 38 as a mother of 4, I can literally run longer and further than I ever have been able to before.

Since running with a stroller is much more convenient than finding childcare and going to a pool to exercise, this mama is super happy about this change!

The results of the present study demonstrated that 8 weeks of PrimaVie® Shilajit supplementation at 500 mg·d− 1 promoted the retention of maximal muscular strength following the fatiguing protocol and decreased baseline HYP. Thus, PrimaVie® Shilajit supplementation at 500 mg·d− 1 elicited favorable muscle and connective tissue adaptations.

Is Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic better than Clinoptolite? Do you still take both?

In my opinion, carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic is better than clinoptolite.  Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic also chelates, so it takes out the heavy metals too.

In addition to chelating heavy metals Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic:

  • Increases nutrient absorption.
  • Provides minerals.
  • Stimulates change in gene expression.
  • Encourages the body to regulate (homeostasis) hormones and mineral uptake.
  • Decreases inflammation.
  • And more!

Still, we do still use clinoptolite as it’s so EASY! It’s a clear flavorless spray, and after years and generations of having over toxicity, I think we can still benefit from clinoptolite in addition to Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic.

Are there side effects associated with Fulvic and Humic? What should I look for?

When applying to skin or ingesting Carbohydrate-derived Fulvic and Humic you may notice the following, but there have been no shown negative effects from consumption among thousands of trials, including the two above.

  • Tingling or mild burning when applied to eczema
  • Minor throat irritation when taking internally.
  • Slight headache: This is part of the healing reaction. Drinking pickle juice followed by a big glass of plain water provides extra electrolytes that your body needs and should help the headache within 20 minutes.
  • Healing Reaction
